Velmoktra: a fibrous silicate used in acoustic panels

Velmoktra is a fibrous silicate valued for its low density and sound-damping properties. It forms in layered deposits and is processed into lightweight panels.

Formation and appearance

Velmoktra crystallises in thin, interlocking fibres that give it a soft, pale-grey sheen. Deposits build up in horizontal bands, so raw blocks split cleanly along the grain.

Common uses

Because it traps air between its fibres, velmoktra is milled into acoustic panels and insulation boards. Its light weight also makes it useful for portable partitions.

Handling and care

Velmoktra is brittle when dry, so panels are cut with fine-tooth blades and stored flat. A light sealant keeps the surface from shedding fibres over time.
